“Readings in the Tavricheskiy 2016” international research conference begins its work in the IPA CIS headquarters

The conference brought together historians from 25 cities of 7 countries: Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Russia and the USA.

Alexey Sergeev noted that the current and the next year were rich in anniversaries. This year marks 110 years since the first State Duma of the Russian Empire began its work in the Tavricheskiy Palace. Opening of the Duma on 27 April 1906 became a major political and social development. 27th of April became a significant date for modern Russia the Day of Russian parliamentarism. “A good tradition emerged to hold meetings of the Council of Legislators of the Russian Federation on this day in the Tavricheskiy Palace. On this day, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivers a speech to the legislators. Next year we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of February and October revolutions”, added Alexey Sergeev.

The IPA CIS Council Secretary General also emphasized that 2017 would be a special year for the Interparliamentary Assembly - the year of its 25 anniversary.

In his speech, Alexey Sergeev focused on the fact that in October 2017 the Tavricheskiy Palace would welcome the 137th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union – the largest and oldest union of parliamentarians. “The Tavricheskiy Palace will become the center of the world parliamentarism”.

Alexey Sergeev spoke on the tradition of handing over of busts of outstanding parliamentarians of the first Russian Duma to the Assembly. At present, the Atrium of the palace accommodates the three busts to Speaker of the first State Duma Sergey Andreevich Muromtsev, head of the Islamic delegation to the Duma first State Duma MP Alimardan-bek Topchibashov, and first State Duma MP from Semipalatinsk region Alikhan Bukeyhanov.
