23 February is Defender of the Fatherland Day

Defender of the Fatherland Day was founded in 1918 as the day of the establishment of the Red Army. In 1922, the day became a holiday and was called as the “Red Army Day”, and then it was renamed as the “Soviet Army and Navy Day”.

After the collapse of the USSR the holiday is celebrated in several CIS counties.

Defender of the Fatherland Day is enshrined at the state level in the Kyrgyz Republic and the Russian Federation.

In Belarus, the holiday is called as Defender of the Fatherland and Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Belarus.

On 23 February, the Armed Forces Day is celebrated in the Republic of Tajikistan.
