Belarusian MPs Considered Amendments to Law on Citizenship

On 4 June, during the meeting of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, the MPs considered a number of draft laws.

The Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Their Social Integration was adopted in the first reading.

The draft Law on Amending Laws on Enforcement Proceedings Issues, amendments to the Law on Individual (Personified) Accounting in the Government Social Insurance System and the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Belarus were also considered in the first reading.

In particular, to the amendments introduce the principle of the best interests of the child into the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Belarus when making decisions concerning nationality issues. The interests of foreigners continuously residing in the Republic of Belarus, as well as persons engaged in labor activity, or persons receiving higher education in the Republic of Belarus were also taken into account.   

The draft law also provides for deprivation of Belarusian citizenship if naturalized persons violated the obligation to respect and comply with the Constitution and other legislative acts of the Republic of Belarus by participating in the terrorist and other extremist activities or causing other serious harm to the country’s interests.

The draft Law on Amending Laws on Notarial Procedures was adopted in the second reading. Furthermore, the MPs ratified the Protocol Amending the Agreement on CIS Cooperation for Combating Illegal Drug Trafficking, Psychotropic Substances and their Precursors.

Also, the MPs ratified the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the Mutual Recognition of Education and Training Documents, along with a number of other international agreements.
