First Plenary Session of IPA CIS Held 32 Years Ago

The first IPA CIS plenary session was held on 15 September 2024  in Bishkek (the Kyrgyz Republic). The meeting participants raised the issue of the permanent residence of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. During exchange of views, it was decided to locate the IPA CIS headquarters in Saint Petersburg (the Russian Federation).

The Tavricheskiy Palace became the headquarters of the Assembly, where at the beginning of the last century the State Duma of the Russian Empire worked – the first democratic institution in the history of the country, bringing together representatives of Russian, Caucasian and Central Asian lands.

On 28-29 December 1992, the building opened its doors to the parliamentarians of the Commonwealth for the first time for the second plenary session of the IPA CIS.

Since then, the IPA CIS has held 56 plenary sessions with the participation of leading politicians from the CIS and foreign countries, at which more than 700 different documents were adopted.

In 2023, after 31 years, the MPs from the Commonwealth countries reconvened in Bishkek to participate in the plenary session and other events of the IPA CIS autumn session.

The next plenary session of the Assembly will be held in Saint Petersburg on 22 November 2024.
