MPs from Republic of Uzbekistan Improve Electoral Legislation
25 January 2021
Today, the regular meeting of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan considered in the first reading the draft Law on Amending Several Legal Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan Regulating the Legislation on Elections.
The draft law is aimed to optimize the national electoral legislation, bringing it in line with generally recognized international standards and democratic reforms implemented in the Republic, as well as improving the country’s international image.
The document abolishes the activity of precinct election commissions holding elections to the district (city) kengashes (councils), whose duties will be fulfilled by the district (city) election commissions. At the same time, the draft law facilitates the inclusion of Uzbekistan citizens living abroad to voter lists and also defines the legal basis for voting using mobile ballot boxes in foreign countries.
The document also defines the process of publication of mid-term and final financial reports of the political parties and their verification by the Accounts Chamber that aims at ensuring transparency of resources allocated for the campaigning.
