Memory of Great Patriotic War and its Heroes Enshrined in CIS Legislation

22 June 1941 is a day of mourning for the CIS Member Nations, which fought bravely with Nazism in the Great Patriotic War. In some CIS countries, the day of the beginning of this most terrible and bloody war is officially fixed in the calendar of memorable dates. The CIS Interparliamentary Assembly promotes the establishment of a legal framework so that the glory of the heroes, who sacrificed their lives for freedom and saved the world from Nazism, would live forever and serve as an example for future generations.

The IPA CIS adopted Model Laws on Perpetuating the Memory of the Deceased in Defense of the Motherland; on Patriotic Education; and on Inadmissibility of Actions Rehabilitating Nazism, Glorifying Nazi Criminals and Their Accomplices. The CIS national parliaments use these documents in the development of their own laws.

At the same time, laws including similar provisions are in place in many CIS Member Nations, including in Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
