Russian MPs Adopt Amendments to Electoral Legislation

Today, the amendments bringing the electoral legislation into line with the new Constitution were adopted in the third reading during the plenary session of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

The amendments, in particular, establish new requirements for a presidential candidate: it should be a Russian citizen over the age of 35, who has permanently resided in Russia for at least 25 years, and does not and did not have in the past any foreign citizenship or residence permit. An exception applies to the cases when a foreign state or part of it was admitted to the Russian Federation.

The elected President can serve a maximum of two terms. At the same time, this restriction does not apply to those who held the post before the entry into force of the amendments to the Constitution.
