IPA CIS delegation participated in the Parliamentary conference on the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration

In Rabat, the Kingdom of Morocco, under the auspices of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors of the Kingdom of Morocco hosted an international parliamentary conference on to the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

The Conference builds on the years of IPU’s work in this area and enables parliamentarians to look into different aspects of the Global Compact and learn about specific activities and mechanisms for implementation of its provisions.

On behalf of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, Chairman of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Social Policy and Human Rights, Chairman of the Permanent Commission of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic on Regional Issues Arif Rahimzade and Deputy Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council – Plenipotentiary Representative of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Aydin Jafarov took part in the Conference.

During the event the IPA CIS delegation met with President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Gabriela Cuevas Barron. The parties noted the global character of the modern migration landscape, as well as stressed the key role of national parliaments in the implementation of the Global Compact and other events in December 2018 and 2019.

Besides, the delegation held meetings with the representatives of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Turkic-Speaking Countries and discussed perspectives of cooperation. At the meeting with PUIC Deputy Secretary General Ali Asghar Mohammadi Sijani the parties noted the particular importance of enhancing cooperation, given the fact that four IPA CIS members are also the members of the PUIC.

The event resulted in the adoption of the resolution, reflecting the principles and approaches the parliamentarians would adhere to in order to achieve the objectives of the Global Compact to be adopted in Marrakesh on 10–11 December 2018.
