Parliament of Republic of Moldova Celebrates 30th Anniversary Since Its First Session

On 17 April 1990, the first session of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova was held.

The convocation of 1990 was the first attempt of the electoral competition in a pluralistic political setting. At the elections to the Supreme Council of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic of the 12th convocation, 371 deputies were elected, the majority of them were supported by the new political movements: Popular Front of Moldova, Movement “Unity” and the Communist Party of Moldova.

On 23 May 1991, in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Council of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic of the 12th convocation, the former soviet Republic was renamed the Republic of Moldova, the Supreme Council became the first parliament of the Republic of Moldova. Three speakers presided over the first parliament: Mircea Snegur, Alexandru Moșanu and Petru Lucinschi.

In 1997, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova joined the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly.

The current 10th convocation of the Parliament was elected on 24 February 2019. The delegation of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova headed by its Speaker Zinaida Greceanii actively participated in the autumn session of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, which took place in the Tavricheskiy Palace (St. Petersburg, Russian Federation) on 21-22 November 2019. The Head of the Moldovan Parliament outlined the need to step up the inter-parliamentary dialogue to promote the interests of the countries and peoples of the Commonwealth.

In 2011, the office of the International Institute for Monitoring Democracy Development, Parliamentarianism and Suffrage Protection of Citizens of IPA CIS Member Nations (IPA CIS IIMDD), which acts as a part of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat, was opened in Chisinau. The Institute was established in order to promote information and experience exchange on the issues of democracy development, suffrage protection and organizing monitoring of the elections in the CIS countries and abroad.
