The national flag of Azerbaijan was adopted as the national symbol of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan on 9 November 1918. In the Soviet period, as of 1920, it was replaced with the flag of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan.
On 5 February 1991 the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted the Law on the National Flag.
On 17 November 2009 by the decree of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev, 9 November became a public holiday.
