Environmental Issues in Big Cities and Pollution of Baltic Sea Discussed in St. Petersburg

On 22-24 March 2023, St. Petersburg hosts the XXII International Forum “Ecology of Big City”. One of its key events is the “Baltic Sea Day” where the experts were presented the legislative work of the IPA CIS in the field of management of maritime regions and preservation of the marine environment.

The main goal of the forum is to promote and implement innovative environmental equipment and technologies that help conserving natural resources, improve environmental security and quality of life in large cities.

Establishing international cooperation, aimed at overcoming the negative effects of global climate change, conservation of water bodies, reducing emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, remains relevant today, despite the difficult situation in the world. This was stated in the welcome letter of Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council Valentina Matvienko, delivered at the plenary session of the forum by Russian Federation Senator Alexander Dvoinykh.

One of the key events of the Forum is the “Baltic Sea Day”. It has been taking place in St. Petersburg more than 20 years, uniting the experts, representatives of power bodies, community and business on one platform.

The participants discussed the role of the reserve system in the study and conservation of marine biological diversity, the protection of marine areas and coasts from excessive human impact, the problems of marine pollution by garbage and microplastics, assessment of the state of the seas. 

The IPA CIS was represented at the event by Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Agrarian Policy, Natural Resources and Ecology Natalia Amburtseva.
