Preparations for Second Global Refugee Forum Discussed at UNHCR Virtual Briefing

On 16 June 2022, a quarterly informal briefing organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was held to discuss the implementation of the 2018 Global Compact on Refugees.

More than 200 representatives of international organizations, ministries and agencies of different countries, public associations and experts on issues of refugees and displaced persons took part in the meeting via videoconferencing.

UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Gillian Triggs opened the meeting and told the participants about the key goals and objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR), the main results, initiatives and measures taken by the governments of various countries and public organizations in the framework of the instrument implementation.

Representatives of the GCR Coordination Team informed the participants about the progress and stages of preparation for the Second Global Refugee Forum, which is scheduled for December 2023, and also called on representatives of organizations to outline their vision and further steps to implement the Global Compact on Refugees in various areas.

During the discussion, the participants spoke about the activities of their organizations in the framework of the GCR implementation and discussed expectations from the next forum.

The Secretariat of the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly was represented at the event by Advisor of the Department for International Relations Maria Tikhotskaya and Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Social Policy and Human Rights Evgenia Vladimirova who took part as observers via videoconferencing.

Let us recall that the IPA CIS delegation took part in the work of the first Global Forum on Refugees held in Geneva in December 2019.
