Significant Contribution of IPA CIS to Elections Observation Noted at Conference “30th Anniversary of Commonwealth of Independent States”

The international research and practice conference “30th Anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States: Results and Prospects” kicked off in Minsk today. The event brought together more than 300 representatives of public authorities of the CIS countries, leading scientists and specialists, heads of the major scientific and educational organizations of a number of countries, including the delegations of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, representatives of the diplomatic corps, bodies of the CIS sectoral cooperation, etc.

Chairperson of the Executive Committee – CIS Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev noted that the Commonwealth was still in demand and could balance common interests and national priorities of the countries.

Speaking about the main areas of cooperation across the Commonwealth, the Chairperson of the Executive Committee emphasized the importance of promoting democratic processes and noted the significant role of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly both in monitoring elections and referendums, and in law-making aimed at strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Sergey Lebedev recalled that the IPA CIS was the developer of the Convention on the Standards of Democratic Elections, Electoral Rights and Freedoms in the Member States of the CIS, Recommendations for CIS International Observers on Elections and Referenda Monitoring.

Based on the outcomes of the event, it is planned to prepare a draft resolution on the developed proposals and initiatives. After approval and agreement, the document will be sent to the Member Nations.
