Third High-Level International Conference  on International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” Held in Capital of Tajikistan

From 11 to 13 June, Dushanbe hosted the Third International High-Level Conference on the International Decade for Action ”Water for Sustainable Development 2018-2028.”Key topics at the event included human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, the role of water resources in economic and social development, the relationship between water resources and climate change, and transboundary and international water cooperation.

During the opening ceremony, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon addressed the participants. The plenary session was chaired by Prime Minister of the country Kokhir Rasulzoda and UN Under-Secretary-General Liu Zhenmin.

The IPA CIS was represented by Member of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Agrarian Policy, Natural Resources and Ecology, Chair of the Committee of the Majlisi Milli Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan on Agriculture, Water and Land Resources Rustam Latifzoda.

The conference aimed to share advanced experiences and innovative solutions and to strengthen partnerships among stakeholders. It gathered representatives of UN member states, UN units, international and regional organizations, international financial institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations, academics, communities and local authorities.

A series of thematic forums and panel discussions were held, focusing on global issues of water resource use, especially in the context of the impact of climate change on glaciers and water resources in general, as well as the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals concerning water resources.

Since 2018, the conference has been organized every two years by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in cooperation with the United Nations.
