Brest, the Commonwealth Cultural Capital 2019

In 2019 Brest will officially acquire the status of the cultural capital of the CIS.

The decision on the implementation of the “Cultural Capitals of the Commonwealth” Intergovernmental Program in 2018 in the Republic of Armenia in 2019 in the Republic of Belarus, and in 2020 in the Republic of Kazakhstan was adopted on 11 October 2017 at the meeting of the Council of the CIS Heads of State in Sochi.

“Brest, the Commonwealth Cultural Capital 2019” program features over 1000 events, including those dedicated to the city’s anniversary. In 2019, Belarus will host the 2nd European Games. Minsk has been declared the official capital of the competition, though some of the events will take place in Brest. In November 2019 Brest will for the first time host the Karpov Chess Cup within the framework of the chess tournament the “Black Pawn”.
