Republic of Uzbekistan assumes Commonwealth Chairmanship for the first time since the establishment of the CIS

The Republic of Uzbekistan reaffirmed the intention to assume chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2020.

During the press-conference following the meeting of the Council of the CIS Heads of Government the Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee – CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev commented on the statement of Uzbekistan: “Our Uzbek colleagues are preparing for the chairmanship in a very responsible manner and are already proposing different initiatives. In late March 2019, presumably, 28–29 March, they propose to host the CIS Financial and Banking Forum in Tashkent”.

The Republic of Uzbekistan ratified the Agreement Establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States in January 1992. However, it has never chaired the Commonwealth until today.
