Sixth Nevsky International Ecological Congress
21-22 May 2013
Tavrichesky Palace
On 21-22 May 2013, in St. Petersburg at the Tavricheskiy Palace, the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member Nations and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation will convene the VI Nevsky International Ecological Congress. The official partners of the Congress are the CIS Executive Committee and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The Congress is part of the List of Priority Events in Humanitarian Cooperation of the CIS Member Nations for 2013-2014.
Nevsky International Ecological Congress is an annual international event dating back to 2008. Its purpose is to contribute to the creation of a global system of environmental security through the promotion of cross-border cooperation, international environmental law and harmonization of national CIS legislative acts regulating the interface between human society and nature.
The theme of the Congress this year echoes the decision of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS Member Nations of 5 December 2012 to nominate 2013 the Year of Ecological Awareness and Conservancy in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The VI Nevsky International Ecological Congress is expected to address challenges in building environmental awareness based on moral values, ecological accountability and purposeful eco-friendly effort. Pursuing this goal is impossible absent ecological dimension in the economy and other social domains, absent environmental ethics and broad awareness-raising about negative effects of pollution.
Considering the eco-awareness focus of the Congress, the plenary sessions and the thematic roundtables are expected to discuss a wide range of issues covering industry and resource-related aspects of environmental awareness, including the development of bio-economy and use of biotechnologies, new mechanisms and tools of eco-insurance, comprehensive water management and safe recycling of industrial and household wastes, shaping ecological awareness at regional and local levels, ecological aspects of nutrition and good health practices, as well as environmental education and awareness-raising, legal tools of improving the engagement of government, business and civil society in shaping ecological awareness.
The Congress invites the leaders of parliaments and governments, representatives of international organizations, businesses, universities, research centers, and the media. The Congress will also feature thematic expositions.
