CIS Observer Mission Drew Outcomes of Presidential Elections Monitoring in Republic of Moldova

On 16 November 2020, the final press conference of the IPA CIS Observer Mission at the presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova took place in Chisinau. During the press conference, the participants of the Observer Mission drew the outcomes of international monitoring of the election campaign.

Head of the CIS Observer Mission, First Deputy Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Viktor Guminskiy stated that the run-off presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova were held in accordance with the country’s Constitution and the Electoral Code. He also noted that the voting took place in a calm atmosphere, and the recorded individual violations were not systemic and could not affect the election results.

Observer Team Coordinator, member of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Rufat Guliyev informed the conference participants about the composition and work of the group. The IPA CIS observers included 45 people: members and plenipotentiaries of the parliaments of the Commonwealth countries, experts from the International Institute for Monitoring Democracy Development, Parliamentarianism and Suffrage Protection of Citizens of IPA CIS Member Nations and the IPA CIS staff members. They performed monitoring not only in the Republic of Moldova, but also at the foreign polling stations in Baku (Azerbaijan Republic), Minsk (Republic of Belarus), Moscow and St. Petersburg (Russian Federation). Rufat Guliyev also stressed that the run-off elections were very active compared to the first round and that the elections were held in full compliance with the legislation of the Republic of Moldova.

According to the preliminary results announced by the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Moldova, after processing the protocols from all polling stations, Maia Sandu won 57,75% of the votes, and Igor Dodon – 42,25%.
