IPA CIS Observers Monitor Elections to People's Assembly of Gagauzia

Elections to the local parliament are being held in ATU Gagauzia (Republic of Moldova). The IPA CIS Observer Team is monitoring polling stations in Comrat and other districts of the autonomous territorial unit.

The day before, the observers met with the candidates for the People’s Assembly, nominated by the Electoral Bloc of Communists and Socialists of the Republic of Moldova Anna Bratunova, Ivan Dimitroglo, Evgheni Tucan and members of the bloc’s electoral headquarters, as well as Deputy Chair of the Party “We Build Europe at Home” (PACE) Alexandru Grumeza and PACE candidate Dmitri Capsamun.

The competitors informed the observers about the final stage of the election campaign and positively assessed the activities of the Central Election Commission of ATU Gagauzia and other election administration bodies. In addition, the candidates noted the acute nature of the election campaign in a number of constituencies and the uneven coverage of the elections by certain regional media.

The IPA CIS observers provided the candidates with information on the composition of the Observer Team and plans during the short-term monitoring in Comrat and the districts of Gagauzia.

The observers also visited the CEC of Gagauzia, where they met with its Chairperson Yana Kovalenko. She informed the observers about the current electoral disputes and the practices of resolution of disputes in court during the election campaign, as well as about the final training events co-organized together with the CEC of the Republic of Moldova for members of the election administration bodies.

The Observer Team members briefed the CEC leadership on the results of long-term monitoring and informed their colleagues about the group’s schedule on the election day.
