Participants of Election Race in Kazakhstan: We Are Optimistic About Situation

On 21 February, IPA CIS international observers held online meetings with the leadership and representatives of the election headquarters of the “Auyl” People’s Patriotic Democratic Party of Kazakhstan and the “Baytaq” Green Party of Kazakhstan.

Deputy Head of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat – Director of the International Institute for Monitoring the Democracy Development, Parliamentarianism and Suffrage Protection of Citizens of IPA CIS Member Nations (IPA CIS IIMDD) Ivan Mushket informed the participants of the meetings that IPA CIS international observers have begun long-term monitoring of the snap elections to the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and as part of the short-term monitoring, they planned to visit polling stations in the capital and regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan between 17 and 19 March 2023.

During the conversation, the parties touched upon the observation by international organizations and stressed the need for objectivity and political impartiality. They also paid special attention to the political platforms and priorities in case of being elected to the Mazhilis.

The representatives of the parties noted that changes in electoral system of the Republic of Kazakhstan break new ground for political involvement and achieving pluralism of opinion. Primarily, the fact of reducing the electoral threshold from 7% to 5% is seen as a significant achievement of the political transition in Kazakhstan.

IPA CIS international observers monitor the parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Elections to the Mazhilis of the Parliament will be held on 19 March 2023.
