The IIMDD IPA CIS Yerevan Office held the international conference “Democracy and Prevention of Social Conflicts”. During the conference, the invited experts from the Yerevan State University – Head of the Constitutional Law Department Vardan Ayvazyan and Head of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law Arthur Vagharshyan – presented the results of their research on the topic.

Director of the Yerevan Office Vagram Avetisyan opened the conference and noted that the development of the human civilization went hand by hand with the social tensions and conflicts arising from them.

The event brought together the MPs of the faction “Bright Armenia” of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Taron Simonyan and Harutyun Babayan, assistants of deputies from the other factions, the representatives of the extra-parliamentary parties (Republican Party of Armenia, Armenian Revolutionary Federation “Dashnaktsutyun”), as well as the professors and PhD students of the Yerevan State University and Russian-Armenian University and activists of public organizations.

Deputy Director of the IIMDD IPA CIS Sergey Karavayev informed the participants on the international monitoring of the elections as a condition of their legitimacy and noted that the monitoring enhanced the trust of the public to the democratically elected authorities and prevented social conflicts. Director of the IIMDD IPA CIS Bishkek branch Islambek Mursabekov focused in his report on the role of the Constitutional Court of the Kyrgyz Republic in conflict settlement.

The discussion concluded with emphasis on the high relevance of the topic and the intention to continue the debate on the issue in order to promote democracy in the post-Soviet space.
