On 18 February 2021, the meeting of the Interparliamentary Commission for Cooperation between the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan was held via videoconferencing.

The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Iliyas Umakhanov and First Deputy Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sodik Safoev.

The meeting discussed the state and prospects of further development and strengthening of inter-parliamentary cooperation between the Federation Council and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, including the implementation of the Plan of Practical Measures (Road Map) for 2020 and the Action Plan for 2021. The parties also discussed the current situation in the field of migration and the possibilities of interaction in the agro-industrial area.

Iliyas Umakhanov noted that relations between Russia and Uzbekistan were based on strategic partnership, determined by the leaders of the two countries. He also noted the active participation of the Uzbekistani colleagues in the IPA CIS Permanent Commissions, aimed to harmonize the legislation of the two countries on a wide range of issues and to strengthen the inter-parliamentary dimension across the Commonwealth.

Ilyas Umakhanov also invited the Uzbekistani colleagues to join the work on the preparation of the World Conference on Interreligious and Interethnic Dialogue, which will be held in cooperation with the UN in May 2022.
