Referendum on Amendments and Additions to Constitution of Republic of Belarus Scheduled for 27 February 2022

On 20 January 2022, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed the Decree on the Announcement of a Republican referendum. In accordance with the document, voting on the amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus will take place on 27 February 2022.

The draft of the new Constitution, in particular, extends the term of office of the parliament from four to five years, prohibits the financing of elections in the Republic of Belarus by foreign countries, citizens and organizations, introduces a two-term limit on the Presidency, declares the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly the highest representative body with broad powers and proposes a number of other significant changes and additions.
