On 22 may 2020, the Committee of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for International Affairs and Inter-parliamentary Relations held a videoconference “Parliamentary Diplomacy as an Important Mechanism to Enhance the Image of New Uzbekistan on the International Arena”.

According to the press service of the Chamber, the event brought together the senators and MPs of the Oliy Majlis, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, professors and lecturers of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, specialists and experts.

During the conference, it was noted that in a short time, the parliament of the Republic of Uzbekistan had became an active participant of the many international inter-parliamentary organizations such as the IPA CIS, the IPU and the OSCE PA.

In order to promote parliamentary diplomacy in the Republic of Uzbekistan, a draft Concept of Parliamentary Diplomacy of the Republic of Uzbekistan was developed. The draft is currently under discussion. It reflects the goals, objectives and principles of parliamentary diplomacy, including the major factors affecting its formation and implementation mechanisms.

According to parliamentarians, one of the main tasks of the Oliy Majlis is the improvement of the reputation of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the international scene and implementation of the active foreign policy. These require strengthening the work of the Chambers to perform the parliamentary oversight over the implementation of many approved roadmaps to attract foreign investment and develop foreign trade.

During the videoconference, perspective directions for the development of the parliamentary diplomacy were discussed, and appropriate recommendations were formulated.
