Challenges to Environmental Safety and Methods of Their Prevention Discussed in Tavricheskiy Palace

The Ninth Nevsky International Ecological Congress continues its work in the Tavricheskiy Palace – the headquarters of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly.

At the roundtable “Environmental Safety. Today’s Challenges and Solutions”, parliamentarians and experts discussed methods to prevent environmental damage caused by industrial activities, reducing risks of environmental emergencies and preventive measures to ensure environmental safety.

The session brought together the IPA CIS MPs, heads of ministries and agencies of the Russian Federation, representatives of international organizations, such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-speaking Countries, civil society organizations, the academia and businesses.

The event was moderated by Chair of the Russian Ecological Society, Co-chair of the Expert Advisory Board at the Committee of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on Agriculture and Food Policy and Environmental Management Rashid Ismailov and Chair of the Committee of the Majlisi namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan on Agriculture, Water and Land Resources Rustam Latifzoda.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kyrgyz Republic, member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic Asylbek Aidaraliyev told about the environmental challenges in Central Asia, in particular, reduction of glaciers and consequent changes in concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, lack of access to drinking water by the population and the need to establish efficient use of water resources.

Professor of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan Holnazar Muhabbatov presented the information on environmental and economic consequences of natural disasters in Tajikistan and highlighted the need of joint comprehensive studies aimed at disaster prevention.

Rustam Latifzoda highly commended the outcomes of deliberations and noted that the active cooperation in the field of environmental protection both within the CIS and other credible international platforms could help to address the global, regional and national environmental challenges.
